The idea of producing a set of materials to enable injecting drug users to preserve their veins, and reduce transition to more dangerous injecting sites was first proposed by the Queensland Needle and Syringe Program
.

The materials were written and published in conjunction with service providers and service users in Queensland and Victoria, and are now available free to services from the State Health Departments of Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.

The materials consist of:
a
briefing paper for workers and injectors interested in the causes and prevention of vein problems;

blunt needle card with key vein care information;

posters with key vein care information;

pads of leaflets; and a booklet aimed at injectors packed with information to help them prolong the life of their veins and reduce the risks of their progressing to more dangerous sites.
